It was a gray Friday morning when Nathaniel George Burkey arrived at a cafe at the home of passionate minds, Bonifacio Global City. An established football player in the country, arriving on a bicycle for an interview was an unexpected entrance. Clad in a grey shirt and khaki shorts, he entered the coffee shop looking windswept. His down-to-earth aura did not reflect courageous and fearless characteristics he has in the field; at least not his athletic body and model-like height and appearance.
“Nate,” as he’s better known, seemed to be destined for what and where he is now, a football player - but not just an ordinary one that he thought he is. There are a lot of things that make Nate different from the other players, but one thing is for sure: his goal in a game against Sri Lanka in 2011 would be the highlight of those.

The momentum-ridden University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers escaped the De La Salle University Green Archers via 73-72 thrilling victory and clinched Game One of the UAAP Season 76 Men’s Basketball Finals in front of 20,525 fans in the best of-three series at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum today.
Kevin Ferrer’s clutch three during the last 41 tics of the game gave the Tigers a reason to celebrate with a 73-69 lead before Jeron Teng counter-parted it with a 3-point play, 73-72.
The Tigers managed to keep their composure in the neck-to-neck game against their 90’s rival during the final seconds of the game when a costly turnover by Aljon Mariano almost shattered the hopes of the España-based squad.

They earned it in the hard way but nonetheless they are back again into the championship and will have the chance to complete another Cinderella-run story.
The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers proved again that they are the comeback kings in the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament as they ousted the top-seeded National University Bulldogs, 76-69, in their winner-take-all semi-finals match up at the Mall of Asia Arena today.
The Tigers registered another history: the first number four seeded-team to eliminate the best team of the eliminations who also guaranteed a twice-to-beat advantage.
UST was down by two as Robin Roño buried a trey in the 6:08 mark of the final quarter, 59-61, when they sparked an 11-0 run including a three by the Kevin Ferrer and capped by Jamil Sheriff’s steal and a lay-up to pull away for good against NU, 70-61, 46 seconds left in the ticks.
Team Captain Jeric Teng and Kevin Ferrer spearheaded the Tigers tallying 19 and 18 points, respectively, while Aljon Mariano contributed 12 of his own with 10 boards for UST’s rally back to the finals.
The España-based squad established a ten-point margin in a three-point play by Teng less than three minutes left in the second canto, 29-19, but the Bulldogs ignited a 12-0 salvo with Gelo Alolino draining two triple while Emmanuel Mbe dominated the paint to steal the lead, 31-29.

Alaska Aces forced a winner take-all match as they posted a come-from-behind victory over the much favored and rival San Mig Coffee Mixers, 112-105, in the season ending PBA Governor’s Cup quarterfinal round at the Smart Araneta Coliseum today.
Aces outscored the Mixers in the pay-off period 31-16 courtesy of Cyrus Baguio’s barrage of baskets and capped by Sonny Thoss’ lead-stealing shot, 98-97 with five minutes left in the game.
Wendell McKines took over down the stretch highlighted by a dunk in the 47 second mark from a turnover of the San Mig to establish a five-point advantage, 107-102, and completed the upset victory with a completed three-point play.

Defending champion Sebastian Vettel continued to rule the 2013 Formula One Championships as he finished the Singapore Grand Prix in a dominating fashion for his third consecutive title and seventh for the season.
Vettel crossed the line after 61 laps way ahead of Fernando Alonso, who is trying to chase him in the leader board, with 32.6 seconds margin. The victory gave the German driver a more comfortable lead in the over-all race tallying 247 points, 60 markers above of Alonso.
The Red Bull driver also secured the pole position in the Marina Bay battle with 1:42.841 while Nico Rosberg and Romain Grosjean landed on second and third spot, respectively.
Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus settled for third place while Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton completed the top five best finishers.
Alonso only placed on the seventh position at the start of the race and crawled up to the runner-up ending. Rosberg took the lead on the first turn but Vettel quickly regain it on the second corner and since then, never looked back.
Vettel already hauled seven titles after the 13 events this year while ending up to 12 of which inside the top five. Vettel is gunning for his fourth consecutive F1 trophy, winning the the world’s driver championships in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers extend their UAAP Season 76 stint by trouncing the top-seeded National University Bulldogs, 71-62, in their Final Four clash today at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Espana-based squad regained their biggest lead of the game in the fourth quarter, 63-45, before NU blasted a 13-0 run to cut the lead down to five, 63-58. NU had a chance to slice the lead down to three but Emmanuel Mbe missed his open-wide dunk.
Veteran guard Jeric Teng saved the Growling Tigers from their drought as he uncorked a triple from way beyond the arc to stop the fiery Bulldogs from their run, 66-58.
Aljon Mariano’s four clutch freethrows during the last minute of the game sealed the win for the Tigers, forcing the Bulldogs to use their twice-to-beat advantage.
“Number four can beat number one,” said UST head coach Pido Jarencio. “Ang pressure nasa kanila kasi kailangan mo magstay sa number one. Kami, number four, nag-aaspire na maging number one.”

The De La Salle University Green Archers secured the second spot with twice-to-beat advantage coming to the semi-finals as they drubbed the gritty Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 74-69, in the UAAP Season 76 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena today.
Taft-based squad leaned to their hot three-point shooting at the first half to build a commanding lead, 37-27. Archers drained eight treys at the first 20 minutes of action, three of which came from L.A. Revilla.
Jason Perkins nailed a fade away basket in the 3:54 mark of the third period to establish a 15-point advantage against the Tamaraws, 53-38. However, FEU tried to tighten the match dropping a 9-0 blitz capped by Anthony Hargrove’s fast break completion to cut the lead to six, 49-55.

The Adamson University Lady Falcons regained their crown in the UAAP beach volleyball scene as they outshone the University of Santo Tomas Lady Tigers, 21-23, 21-17, 15-9, in the game two of the finals of UAAP Season 76 Women’s Beach Volleyball Tournament earlier today at the University of the East – Caloocan.
The duo of Adamson’s Shiela Marie Pineda and Amanda Villanueva swept the tandem of UST’s Pamela Lastimosa and Maruja Banaticla, 2-0, in a best-of-three series.
Adamson won two sets to one on their first game last Sunday, 20-22, 21-19, and 16-14.
This season’s crown is the Lady Falcons’ third title in the women’s division of beach volleyball, snapping from the Lady Tigers their two-year domination.
Pineda was also named as the Most Valuable Player in the competition.

Far Eastern University’s point guard Terrence Romeo will be hailed as the new Most Valuable Player in the UAAP Season 76 Men’s Basketball Tournament, ending the two-year reign of National University’s Bobby Ray Parks.
The FEU guard tallied a total of 75.2857 statistical points (SPs) in this season’s MVP race.
Romeo ended the eliminations round with an average of 22.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.
